Alden "All Done" in Portville
Panthers Shutout Bulldogs 17 - 0
Under the steady rains of hurricane remnants, Portville won a hard-fought battle with
Alden, a Class B school. Portville goes to 3-0 for the season, while Alden falls to 1-2.
The sloppy weather forced both teams to run the ball alot, and PCS was able to take advantage
of some Alden mistakes. With 4 minutes left before the half, Kris Young hit a field goal to start the late scoring.
This was set up by a sack and fumble recovery by the Panther D.
Alden pounded the pigskin 51 times for 130 total yards rushing, but Portville put them
in bad field position throughout the game, thanks to some good special teams play and very tough defense. The Panthers
knocked down 4 passes, had several sacks, and shut down the Bulldogs when necessary.
E/DE Brad Holcomb had some key plays on both sides of the ball, especially on defense.
DE Eric Caya and Matt Miller continued their excellent play on defense as well. Josh Kausner, Ross Degolier, Jarid Lowe,
Josh Haynes, and their comrades played tough. Alden's running backs weighed 230 and 220 pounds respectively.
It was a tenuous score of 3-0 until 3 minutes to go in the game, when QB Brian Nitsche
finally scored the first TD via a nice run and blocking, followed by a Young XP kick. Forty seconds later, Joe
Holcomb intercepted a pass and took it 50 yards to the house, sealing the big victory. Young was perfect in kicking.
Joe had 61 yards rushing, while Nitsche contributed 30 yards running and was 5 of 11
for 40 yards passing. PCS only had 4 penalties this game, along with 6 strategic punts.
This was a huge win for Portville, especially against such a big school...with big players.
The Alden linemen probably outweighed Portville's by an average of 30 pounds. But the big boys from Buffalo were not
enough for the powerhouses of Portville. Hopefully, the media up there in Erie County will take notice.
