PANTHERS CLAW THE BEARS 40 - 20
Two Brads Excel

Portville traveled two hours north to Cheektowaga and hammered John F. Kennedy in 80 degrees of pure sunshine, as several players contributed to the scoring.

The Panthers were able to combine strong running with some strategic passing, all enabled by an offensive line that was anchored by center Brad Hill.  In the first quarter, QB Brian Nitsche hit Brad Holcomb for a 9-yard TD strike, followed by a Joe Holcomb extra point pass.

In the second, Jarid Lowe muscled his way for a one-yard score, and Joe Holcomb ran one in from 4 yards out.  PCS was up 20-0 at halftime.  Unfortunately, JFK's QB suffered a concussion making a tackle and was lost for the rest of the matchup.

Portville scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter.  Nitsche hit Brad for another passing TD of 17 yards, and Brian had a 17-yard scamper into the endzone.  The Bears scored 2 nice TDs in the quarter.  Cody Elliot took a 91-yard kickoff return to the house (he has 6 TDs in two games).

Josh Haynes scored a 2-yard TD run in the final quarter, collecting his pay for a tough game.  Kirk Austin had some nice catches, and Alex Woodhead had 100 yards rushing.  Joe Holcomb checked in with 120 yards as well.  PCS ran the ball 53 times for 293 yards, while Nitsche was 6 of 11 in passing for 85 yards and 2 TDs.

Portville had no turnovers, but they were penalized 12 times for 115 yards.  PCS won the first down battle 18-6.  Not enough can be said about the offensive line and their methodical effectiveness.

Once again, Matt Miller had a dominating performance, especially on defense with Eric Caya, Matt Blue, Ross Degolier, and the other studs.  JFK had minus 31 yards rushing...that tells the story.

The coaching staff did a great job and were pleased with the win, especially when the team went up so big against a pretty good squad.

Game 2
at JFK
Saturday   Sept. 11   2 pm

JFK beat Portville 32-0 in a playoff game in 1986,
the only time these schools have met on the gridiron.
Visiting C-School JFK beat B-School Cheektowaga 25-13 in the first week of action.  JFK is a fast team that cannot be underestimated, despite their 2-6 record in 2003.  They are the North Division team to beat.
