Team Caya Wins Jaekle Golf Tourney
Tiger Woods a No-show
by Amy Hildebrand
The 6th Annual Moke Jaekle Golf Classic was won by the team of Joe Caya, Arnie Pytcher, Jimmy Reynolds, and Doug
Torrey.
As in past years of this famous golf tournament, it took a few miracle shots to produce a winning "best-ball"
foursome at the Waterways course off the Haskell. The weather was awesome, as a dozen teams played with nature, had
a great time for nine holes, and raised money for the Portville varsity football team. Moke and his friends donated
tons of prizes and money towards the successful event.
Secretaries at Wayne Paving sent out several unanswered invitations to Tiger Woods prior to the big day, and
everyone was still hoping for a surprise visit right up to the hot dog party afterwards. His refusal to come to this
young, but prestigious classic did not dampen the spirits of the participants though.
Team Caya added Torrey at the last minute, and they came up with a solid round of 4-under par, with everyone
hitting some key shots, especially Joe. The team had only one bogey and managed to collect enough birdies for 2-under,
going into the final par-5 hole.
Pytcher and Caya hit massive tee shots, but Arnie's was in the center of the fairway, fulfilling Reynolds'
prophesy, "Arnie, you're due". Caya then proceeded to smack a fairway wood, placing the ball 2 feet from the cup, where
he then dumped it in for the eventual victory.
Jaekle provided the participants with all sorts of great prizes (some donated by Jim Kelly) in the remodeled
barn on the wonderful course. Ironically and joyfully, this writer took in the most stash of all.
Awards were given out at the PCS Class of 1979 reunion party at Mickey's Outback that evening. Torrey
won the tournament MVP award and Moke was able to give the football team a few hundred dollars for the coming season.
Next year's 18-hole classic will occur on reunion weekend once again. Moke is hoping to invite Jack Nicklaus or Arnold
Palmer.
