Panthers skunk Gators in Catt County pigskin dog-fight
by Harley Hawbaker
Under the bright June sun, the Portville alumni football team beat the Allegany-Limestone squad, 26 - 0, in
the second meeting for the two towns. ALCS organized a nice charity event that raised money for the youth
and high school gridiron teams...before an estimated crowd of 1,000 fans.
Portville's offensive line led the way, as PCS ate up the clock with mostly small bites and several big plays, including
2 TD bombs from Brian Nitsche to Kyle Witherell. Nitsche also had 2 touchdown runs to round out the scoring.
Portville's defense stood giant as well, registering two interceptions and a fumble recovery (by Nitsche, Dustin Sprague,
and Jim Childs, respectively).
The D-line and LBs completely shut down the A-L running attack, reminiscent of the PCS varsity pounding of Allegany in
1978, when the old Blue Devils only managed 35 total yards (click here for that video).
The Gators fought valiantly, but the more-experienced Port-Villians ran the ball well, as Joe and Brad Holcomb pounded
away beside dudes like Mike Hendryx, Chris Yehl, Jess McFall, Toby Miller, Andy Studley, Shannon Knight, Matt Mason, Josh
Haynes, and Jon Darrin. Long drives in the third and fourth quarters chewed up time and turf for the victors.
As in past games, Ryan Hunt, Larry Welty, Mike Torrey, Corey Miller, Matt Miller, Jeff Borer, Dan Bailey, John Gordnier,
and Brad Hill dominated on defense and special teams. Rookies John Barber, Matt Burlingame, Matt Blue, and Matt Rogers
made Coaches Swetland, Milne, Waugh, and Holcomb very happy with their play, as well.
