Today's main hunting lodge and Hawbaker Ranch that it sits on, began with the building of this underground structure
in 1980, in the Irish Basin, town of Little Genesee. Lynford Hawbaker supervised a small group of kinsfolk (Jedediah,
Milford, Lemuel, Samuel, Jeremiah, Lucas, and others) and Big Jim's dream took shape.
At the time, they had only 400 acres of legitimate hunting grounds, 5 employees, and alot of expertise to be taught to
eager hunters.
Big Jim was mighty happy when Lynford and the crew put the finishing touches on the Old Lodge, which had 3,000 square
foot of space and was heated by one wood stove. "Even in the dead of winter, it was hot as hell in there," notes Milford
Hawbaker. "Perfect for frost-bitten guests who weren't prepared as Big Jim would have had them been."
Lynford was so dedicated to the construction of the first Hawbaker Hunting Lodge that he lost a finger hauling wood from
The Basin.
