Milt Latimer 38-8-2 |
Milt Latimer coached the Portville varsity to unmatched heights during the early 1940s. From 1940
to 1944, they went undefeated in 27 consecutive games (26-0-1). It was World War II, and the boys rolled over their
local opponents, taking the Tri-County championship 4 years in a row, winning every game.
The 1942 team was especially monstrous, out-scoring the other squads 242-13. Some of the players from
that era included Tony Wilson, Bob North, Dick Johnson, Bob and Billy Afton, Don and Duncan Wormer, and Ernest LaFever.
Latimer went off to fight in the war, while another military man, Don Smith, coached the final undefeated
season of the streak in 1945.
The undefeated streak could have been extended to 41 games in a row, if it hadn't been for a loss to Wellsville
to start to 1945 campaign. Portville went undefeated for another 13 games, finally losing a playoff contest in
1946 to Springville.
In that year, Don Smith was assisted by Jim Wiles, while Ike Harrison manned the quarterbacking duties as
a senior star.
In 1947, Coach Morty Morris introduced the T-formation to his 25 players, assisted by Wiles, Joe Gibbons,
and Lee Frair.
