PANTHERS WIN BIG
(Sept 19, Portville, NY)
The
Portville Gridiron Squad looked good defeating Sherman-Clymer 42-20, the home debut for the 2014 Panthers.
Lead by Junior QB #24 Sean Harris, the whole gang contributed in some fashion
or another. Senior playmakers and top tacklers Isaac Hilyer and Chase Swetland pulled off multiple moves and jukes to get
into the end-zone several times, while #55 MLB Grant Milne clogged the interior with his comrades for a very good defensive
effort.
#7 Cal Hollamby pounded the ball as RB and kicker,
giving the crowd of 500 fans something to cheer about. Noted Panther alum Big Jim Hawbaker happily, "I'm
proud of these boys bouncing back from that Randolph loss. They got mad and improved...The seniors stepped up, and so did
Evans, Gehm, Steele, Waugh, Yehl...Gilliland and Zink...I love these kids."
"Colligan and the line did a decent job. It's all about the line, ya know," stated Hawbaker.
"They need to tackle better if they want to win more games, though."
Senior #13 Austin Cornelius started off the PCS scoring during the first series with a 60-yard reception and
run to inside the 10. Portville was up 28-0 before the opponents even scored, delighting all the alumni that returned for
the half-time festivities.
2014 indictees into the PCS Sports Hall of Fame were honored,
including Lee and Lance Chaffee, who excelled in academics, athletics, and the arts during the 1960s. 1990s' grads Brian
Miller, Brian Decker, and Meredith Yates joined them in this prestigious group.
According
to long-time football observer, Bobby Becker, "It was a great night for the town of Portville. The boys dominated in
the first half, gave up a couple TDs in the 3rd quarter, but turned up the fire to roll in the end. That Hilyer dude made
some big plays on offense, defense, and special teams."
It was Head Coach Gay
Swetland's 200th game and 125th victory. Assistants Matt Milne and Dave Waugh have been with Swetland for almost his entire
tenure, which began in 1992.
