1909 Avice travels to Panama |
Avice Greene Burrell was born September 12, 1891 in Big Run, near Punxsutawney, PA. She was the oldest of five
children to William Lloyd and Alfaretta Jane Greene. Avice met her husband, Adelbert Joseph Burrell, while the family
lived on the Panama Canal. They were married December 10, 1910 and had six children before "Bert"
was tragically killed in 1920 while working on the railroad. In 1945, Avice began to write her life story and research her ancestry.
An avid member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she wrote letters to relatives and officials, traveled to
various Pennsy towns and cemeteries, and made a couple trips to Harrisburg to discover her roots. She was able to trace records and documents back to 1640
from Scotland and Ireland. She also saved photographs from her ancestors dating back to 1864, when her mother was a baby and
her uncles were in the Civil War. Her eldest child Ruth also saved many photos, newspaper articles, and family stories. Avice Burrell died in
1977 but left copies of her story, notes, and photographs with her children, including her oldest Ruth, who passed on the history
and artifacts to her oldest, Anne Wilson Sutter, who gave much of it to her nephew, Jimmy Reynolds. Descendants
of Claire, Erma, Bill, and Ted also inherited many items over the years. Our goal is to share what Avice began, saved, and passed to her descendants,
which includes 6 children (the first died as an infant), 21 grandchildren, 79 great grandchildren, and many more great,
great and 3-greats generations as of 2014...over 300 descendants in total, many from the Portville, Bolivar, Shinglehouse,
Olean area...but now living around the country. Please feel free to contact me for any mistakes or corrections with names, dates, etc.
Jimmy Reynolds.
